Srinagar, Mar 24 (KNO): The MB Canal, which has been rendered non-functional due to the landslides and leakages, is set for restoration, with the government stating that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth 21.98 crore is being prepared for its improvement and extension. Responding to a query by MLA Kangan ST, Mian Mehar Ali, the Minister Jal Shakti Department has confirmed that the canal’s alignment through treacherous and hilly terrain has made it highly susceptible to landslides and hill mass movements, severely affecting its functionality. “As part of the proposed 10.05 km-long restoration project, authorities plan to replace the landslide-prone section of the canal with MS pipes instead of an open channel to enhance durability and prevent further damage. The project, with a Command Area of 524.28 hectares and a Cost-Benefit Ratio of 1.08:1, has been included in the project shelf for NABARD funding,” the reply reads as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). Also, the government is assessing the feasibility of a fully piped channel to further strengthen the canal’s infrastructure and ensure long-term sustainability, the reply reads—(KNO)
